Aren’t I cute! Do you want me?

As of 12/18/10 All  have been adopted .

We are taking in some Berner/Aussie mixes. Mom Was an Aussie and Dad was a Berner. They are 10 weeks old and were from an Amish breeder that thought they would be a nice mix, but did not sell as he had hoped. We are getting in 4 males, 2 have very Berner-like markings and 2 have thinner blazes, but everything else looks like a Bernese. The dad was of average size, so we don’t know how big they will get. We are thinking the 60-70 pound range, but could go either way. They will be in foster most likely Sunday. They seem a little overwhelmed with new things, so they will need to got to homes without small children. They are estimated at least 15 pounds right now. They become outgoing after a short adjustment to new things, but are still very impressionable to scary things. They will need to be socialized and trained as any puppy needs at this age. UPDATE 11/30

All the boys have been neutered, shots and frontline. They have roundworms and are being treated.  I think Alpine (AL) is the smartest and most dominate of the 3. He has asked several times to go out by pawing at the door, he also is actually, deliberately lifting his leg at 11-12 weeks! I don’t know what that means, but find it interesting. He like to come up on my lap and seems to be the most distressed when left alone. Actual weight at the vets was 16.7

Kia and Bella went to their new together. Kia needed and outgoing playmate and Bella loves everything, so a sister will be tons of fun as both love to play. Being with just a few months of each other in age, we are hoping for a long life together. They now live in a fenced yard where Bella will become a family dog living in the house, full time for the first time in a year and a half. The girls now reside in Saginaw, MI

Bella came into her current owners life when her oldest son told her that a friend of his had a Bernese Mountain Dog that was kept in a 8’ x 10’ kennel behind his house. The dog had been purchased as a puppy (born approx. Nov 2008) for the guy’s girlfriend and small son. She was kept in the house until she started getting big and knocking the little boy down. Instead of training her, they moved her to the back yard. Since then, the girlfriend and son moved out. The dog got very little attention after that. She had no overhead shelter except for a small shade tree. She was routinely fed and watered but stayed in the kennel full of mud and feces. She picked her up on July 20^thand took her straight to the vet’s for a checkup, shots, and grooming. she also had her microchipped. Luckily, she tested negative for heartworms. The groomer had to completely shave her because of severe matting. She weighed about 65 pounds and was full of whipworms. She was treated for the worms. When she was spayed September 17^thshe weighed 71 pounds. Now she is a very healthy and happy dog. She wishes she had the time for her that she deserves. She will make a great dog for someone that can spend time with her and give her plenty of exercise. She gets along well with cats and two Pomeranians. She even allows her 8 pound pom Chip to be alpha. She does well in the house but she has not been kept her in for more than 2 hours at a time. She stays in a kennel attached to a section of a barn with access to a 20’ x 25’ fenced in area. In the evenings after work and on weekends she spends time outside working around the farm. She has learned to sit on command, comes when called or whistled for, and goes in the kennel when you say ‘kennel’ and reward her with a treat. She needs more training to stop her from jumping when she is overly excited. Bella is a gem and deserves a wonderful new home where she can be loved.

We want Bella to go to a home where she will be part of the family, inside with the people. She likes people and will be a good family dog. She will need basic training for obedience and we are sure some house training. Since she has been in kennels her whole life, we want her to have a fenced yard to run and play in as she most likely does not know what boundaries are.

Kia is a 31 month old spayed girl, born on 3/11/08. She is AKC registered, but from an Amish breeder. She is lightly boned at about 80 pounds, nicely marked.

Kia is a shy girl that becomes stressed around small children. In her last home she hid under the bed for 4 months after the arrival of a new baby. For this reason we will not put her in a home with children under 8 years old. She is also timid around new people, especially men. It takes a little time to warm up but she will. She has only been here for 5 days, so we are still evaluating for a bit. Because of her fears, she will require a above ground fenced yard because if frightened she will not come and will run away.

10/22/10 update

After spending over a week with Kia, was have determined that she needs a quiet home with no children. She has trust issues with new things, and has to get reacquainted with people if they have been gone for a day or so. She is loving and likes to curl up on the couch with us and will sleep on the bed if invited. She will occasionally eat sox or the like if not watched.

We were fortunate enough to find a home wiling to keep both these older boy together. We have brought them back to appropriate weights and got the clean ad worm free. They need more time before being treated for their heart worms, so their new home is going to finish getting them healthy and do their treatment.

They made the 7-leg, 2 day trip to Kansas City with the help of volunteers driving the distance back to back on Aug 5 & 6th. All who were involved remarked on what sweet dogs they are.

We just took in 2 boys from a shelter that were found as strays. They have been at the shelter for 2 weeks without anyone looking for them. They are both neutered and appear to have been at some point loved and cared for. Although right now they are severely matted, and in need of grooming and vet check ups. They have no names that we know of, so the thin boy were are going to call Eli. He has a slight eye infection. We will have him checked as soon as we can. Both dogs are estimated at about 4-6 years old.

Caleb, seems to maybe have been shown at some point. He “Stacks” himself on the table. Both boys seem accustom to the grooming table, not afraid of the blow dryer, and wanted their baths! They are gentle with treats. Everything else is unknown, but seem to have nice temperaments and are friendly. they are eating up the attention they are getting. Our opinion is that they were part of a family at some point, but have been neglected for a while.

UPDATER 6/25

 Both boys are doing great 1 day later. Eli has

heart worms, we are waiting for Caleb’s to come back. Both these boys seem to be exceptional in personality. They accept everything being done to them. Eli is not feeling to well and likes to sleep, but has bouts of puppyness. Caleb I am told is just a “goof” very funny and playful. We will be bringing them to our main foster home Saturday 6/26 and continue their vet care and evaluation.

We are wondering if these dogs are not retired show dogs that were placed or the owner fell into hard times. At some point thse dogs were well cared for, and have fallen into neglect.

Update 6/27The latest update is that both Eli and Caleb have heartworms. Eli also has bronchitis, a bladder infection, both are anemic, have at least 2 typs of worms, and underweight. Eli is more towards emaciation. Both are being wormed, received frontline and Eli is on antibiotics. Eli is not eating well but we have been getting canned food in him sometimes. Hopefully, when we get rid of their worms and some weight on them, we can then pursue their heartworm treatments.  You can see Eli on UTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYgscsyz0cE

UPDATE JULY 4th

The boys are doing better, they are eating pretty well, especially Eli. They received Interceptor to kill off the baby heartworms which knocked them down a bit. It really took some of Caleb’s appetite. We started giving Eli something for pain to see if it would improve his mobility, and it has greatly. He is getting up on his own and wandering around the yard for the first time. So hopefully we are seeing just bad hips rather than a neurological issue. They are putting on weight and their personalities are coming out more. Caleb will bounce around and want to play but he has to be kept quiet because of the heartworm treatment. We hope to start his full treatment soon once he is eating regularly.

UPDATE: JULY 12th

   

Crate! What crate?

 So far things seem to be going very well. We think our show dog potential may be incorrect. We think they stood on the tables because they were so sick. Caleb does good when we work on him but Eli hates the trimmers

They are going to get their 2nd worming this weekend. I’m sure that is one reason they feel better, getting rid of all those worms. They are starting to play and pick up toys, Eli will take them back to his crate and squeak them.

We think Eli is the leader and Caleb follows his lead. Caleb will not get up if called but if Eli goes, then he is right behind time out of the crates. They sometimes even get in the same crate. They love their crates and we think that they think they belong there. So we have to work on letting them know it is OK to spend time interactacting.

 We are planning to do Caleb’s heartworm treatment this weekend if all goes to plan. They are starting to want to play and putting on weight. The boys are doing much better, eating regularly and seem happy.

UPDATE 7/23

Caleb got his first HW shot and it really whipped him out. We did not do the 2nd as the first made hims so sick. He will get the shot again in a month. He stopped eating and felt like crap. He is responding much better now and has begun to eat again. Eli is doing very well and is wanting to play now.

The boy will be going to their new home the first weekend in August. They will be living near Kansas City KS.

Manny went to live with a great family in PA also. Different home so all 3, Manny, Nisey and Wyn all live within a half hour of each other. Manny has some buddy’s to play with and a big fenced yard. Hurray for Manny!

Yesterday, June 2oth, Wynn and Nisey went to live in Pennsylvania but to different homes. Wynn when to live with Schultz and his new family. Schultz we placed out there last fall and is doing super with all the care his new mom and dad are giving him.Nisey now lives with a wonderful family that named their restaurant after Fred, there last Berner which passed on recently.

We are keeping our fingers and toes crossed that both are now done being bounced around and in their forever homes.

Adoption Pending

Manny is a super sweet 11 month old.  He was surrendered to our rescue because he was being mistreated by the male in the household.  Understandably, Manny is a little shy, especially with men, but he LOVES to be petted.  This lovely boy does well with cats and other dogs.  He needs a home with a  fully fenced yard (no shock collars!) and children over the age of 8yrs.    He needs to be allowed to adjust and learn to trust again and that not all men are mean. He is already overcoming his past by learning to accept men.
He came with tons of worms which he is being treated for.

Adoption Pending

Wynn (Wynnie) is a very big boy at 130 pounds, neutered and is about 18 months old. He is in good health with no known health issues.
Wynn has confidence and shyness issues which he has turned into possessiveness and protectiveness of his home and owners. Wynn needs a less active home with non-dominate dogs, as he will most likely end up the dominate one. He loves to play with our young guy and gets along with everyone after settling in after introductions. He may be more reactive to males than females. Work with positive reinforcement and lots of treats will help Wynnie accept new people. He needs a strong leader/owner, but understanding to a shy/reactionary dog. Wynn has great potential to be a fantastic companion. He had a fear of some noises and actions as many dogs do with less confidence. However, he does not have a problem with storms.
Due to his history with people and some dogs, Wynn will require an above ground full fenced yard without exception. An “invisible” shock style fence will adversely affect his temperament and make matters worse.

UPDATE 5/10/10

Wynnie is a very lovable boy and is doing well. He is all puppy still but in a large body. He thinks he is small but the paw print on the top of our sliding glass door at the frame tells different. Very happy when in his comfort zone. Wynn needs a home with another dog he can play with and keep up with him. He is the first to stop so a dog that can play rough for about 10 minutes at a time is good. He likes me (Bruce) but he loves his women when he gets attached. He is a very loyal boy, and a lot of fun. He is very exuberant when coming home and jumps up wanting attention and sometimes play nips.

       Wynn needs somone that can except him at his pace, not a lot of visitors or someone willing to work with a trainer to work him through his insecurity of strangers coming into his home
