Our Mission

Adopted from our RescueThe mission of the HMBMD Rescue/Re-home program is to take in purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs that are in shelters, or whose owners no longer want or cannot maintain them, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor for Bernese Mountain Dogs that might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Thank You for inquiring about our rescue program. Be sure to read Is a Berner Right for You?

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. However, we have assisted in over 200 re-homings and rescues. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. The youngest dog that has been in the program was 5 months old until recently. Puppies don’t normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended. The adoption fee is nominal for both, and are now treated the same. Read about Hugo

We ask to be reimbursed for medical bills that we have incurred if any. Please keep in mind that most “rescue/rehome dogs” are place because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dogs issues were do to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy’s on the Adopting page.
